Chad's government is in total control of the capital N'Djamena and the country, President Idriss Deby said on Wednesday, in his first public appearance since rebels attacked the city at the weekend.

"We have total control of the situation, not only in the capital, but also the whole country," Deby told a news conference in N'Djamena.

"The local accomplices have been seized, some have fled, others left with the mercenaries," he said.

Deby said France had not been directly involved in military efforts to check the rebel offensive, which he accused Sudanese President Omar Hassan al-Bashir of backing.

"Al-Bashir has ransacked his country. Instead of launching into adventures which threaten the stability of the region, he should use his oil money to resolve the crisis in Darfur," Deby said.
