Police officers who are found guilty of misusing their authority will be dealt with, National Police Commissioner Bheki Cele said on Friday.
He made the comment following a public outcry over recent reports of people being killed by police in KwaZulu-Natal, SABC radio news reported.
This follows an incident in which gospel singer, Sifiso Mzulwini, was shot dead by police who claimed he was a wanted criminal. His family is now questioning the circumstances of the shooting.
Cele said that people should not be quick to judge such incidents as police brutality. He said proper investigations should be allowed to first determine what happened.
"The South African Police Service has too many watchdog bodies or organisations that are watching the police. The Independent Complaints Directorate, the Secretariat, the Human Rights, ourselves with the internal Inspectorate and many others ensure that police who get out of hand will be dealt with. I am also concerned when police are found guilty before they go to court."
However, Cele pointed out that police would protect themselves if faced with danger.
