Casac welcomes the formation of the Press Freedom Commissipon as a self-regulatory body which aims ‘to ensure press freedom in support of enhancing our democracy which is founded on human dignity, equality and freedom’.
CASAC commends this initiative by the Print Media Association of South Africa and the South African National Editors Forum. Advocate Vusi Pikoli who attended the launch on behalf of CASAC says the new body “reinforces sections 16 (Freedom of Expression) and 32 (access to information) of our Constitution”.
“A free press is a hallmark of a free society, it promotes and protects democracy. The founding provisions of our Constitution speak of accountability, responsiveness and openness. A free press is critical in the attainment of those values,” said Pikoli.
CASAC urges all South Africans to allow PFC to explore ways in which the South African print media can be regulated in a way that enhances our constitutional values and principles.
