Cabi net has approved the ratification of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Protocol on Politics, Defence and Security Co-operation.

The protocol was initially signed by member states at the SADC Ordinary Summit Heads of State and Government held in Blantyre, Malawi from 12 to 14 August last year.

The protocol seeks to protect the citizens and to safeguard the development of the region against instability arising from the breakdown of law and order, intra-state conflict, inter-state conflict and aggression.

At its meeting in Cape Town yesterday, Cabinet also demonstrated the country's commitment to strive for the promotion and protection of the rights of the child by endorsing the UN Optional Protocol to the Convention on the Rights of the Child on the Involvement of Children in Armed Conflicts.

The International Atomic Energy Agency Joint Convention on the Safety of Spent Fuel Management and on the Safety of Radioactive Waste Management was also presented to Parliament for ratification.

This obligation commits government to ensure that individuals, society and the environment are adequately protected against radiological and other hazards.

In order to position South Africa to play its part in the fight against corruption, which according to estimates costs Africa $150 billion , Cabinet approved the African Union Convention on Preventing and Combating Corruption.

Amongst others, it will ensure the repatriation of corruption offenders, networking among anti-corruption agencies and the setting up of a databank by the AU to exchange information on corruption - including money laundering and illicit self-enrichment. - BuaNews
