US President George W Bush has invited leaders of Algeria, Ghana, Nigeria, Senegal, South Africa and Uganda to the summit of major industrialised nations in Georgia on June 10, his spokesman said Tuesday.

Bush looks forward to discussing topics including famine and food security; peacekeeping; disarmament; HIV/Aids; and corruption, White House press secretary Scott McClellan said in a statement.

The summit of the Group of Seven major industrialised nations plus Russia, the G8, is to be held at the Sea Island resort off the coast of the southern US state of Georgia.

"President Bush's invitation to the African leaders emphasises the important relationships which the US and the rest of the G-8 have with Africa," McClellan said.- Sapa-AFP
