Business Unity SA (BUSA) welcomes the confirmation by the Commission for Conciliation Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) of the end of the Lonmin strike. It is unfortunate and regrettable that it took 6 weeks and 44 deaths – in addition, economic and productivity losses to reach this point.
BUSA reiterates its position that the appointed judicial commission of enquiry, promptly commence its work to investigate the fundamental causes of these unfortunate events and recommend steps to be taken to avoid the recurrence of similar incidents. This will also go a long way in rebuilding investor confidence.
In conclusion, the Lonmin agreement affirms the importance of a structured approach to resolution of workplace disputes. Now, more than ever there is need for stability in the labour market. Industrial peace is best achieved within a framework of clear rights and obligations. The time is now to rebuild the relationship of trust between employers, employees and unions to ensure that we never have another Marikana.
