The Brics story remained largely untold in Africa, delegates attending a Brics Media Forum in Cape Town were told on Thursday.

Addressing delegated at a session of the Brics (Brazil, Russia, China, India, South Africa) Media Forum in Cape Town, editors of various publications in Kenya, Ghana, and Tanzania said.

Andrew Kagwa from the Standard in Kenya, east Africa's oldest newspaper, said while his country has a vibrant media, not much is known about the Brics partnership.

"That tells us we need to do more as media in Africa. We need to talk to each other," said Kagwa.

"Africa must own its own stories and I think Brics offers us a a solution as a forum."

Fellow speaker, Aly Ramji, the director of Mediapix Ltd and the managing editor of The Exchange in Tanzania, said while the Brics collaboration has resulted in investment in east Africa, the stories are still being told by western media.

"The failure comes down to media in our own respective countries because we also tend to adhere to listening to reports from CNN, AFP and Reuters," said Ramji.

"Africans can speak on behalf of other Africans. That's something right now that is still a challenge, even on social media a lot of people post articles from the BBC and CNN instead of some of the African publications."

Editors from several African media houses say the Brics Media Forum must go beyond just talk and put practical agreements in place so information can be shared between Brics media and their African counterparts.
