The US leader said that the "Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief," totalling 15 billion dollars over five years, will help prevent seven million new HIV infections.
"If we can turn the presidents bold long term vision into near term results were excited," Bono said in a statement. "Any delay in increased funding means more lives lost and an even bigger check in the future." The rock star said 2.5 billion dollars should be appropriated for combating AIDS already in this years US budget in order to start saving the lives of 2.5 million Africans who die of HIV/AIDS each year.
"The presidents emphasis upon anti-retroviral treatment represents a true paradigm shift and is to be wholly welcomed," Bono said, adding that Europe must match the US contribution - Sapa-AFP.
