Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi arrived in the US yesterday for talks with President George W Bush on the situation in Iraq and other international issues.

Berlusconi arrived at Bush's Texas ranch at about 21:20 GMT and was due to stay overnight.

For Berlusconi, the trip represents a key personal endorsement from Bush.

Berlusconi "has been a great friend and partner in the war on terrorism," said White House spokesperson Scott McClellan.

"I think he's long been a friend and partner in our efforts to confront threats in the post-September 11 world".

Other officials say the task of establishing a viable government in postwar Iraq, the Middle East peace process, and the drive to stem the spread of weapons of mass destruction will come up in the talks. - Sapa-AFP.
