African National Congress (ANC) chairperson Baleka Mbete on Wednesday urged the movement's youth wing to be "scientific" when taking positions for or against party members deployed in government.

"In taking positions against ANC deployees in government, please ensure that you do it on a scientific basis. Please ensure that you are not being confused by the media... do your homework as you take positions against ANC deployees in government," Mbete told thousands of delegates attending the ANCYL's first national general council in Midrand.

"Leave the media. They will not stop putting things their own way... don't take position that are only based on media reports. That is dangerous."

Mbete told delegates packed into the venue that they were leaders themselves, and warned them that leadership had a way of challenging individuals.

"... There are times when you need to forgo certain... luxuries, including the right to express anger anytime and anywhere. But when you are a leader you will deal with it (anger) differently."

ANCYL president Julius Malema is known for his angry outbursts, one example being the tirade he launched at a BBC journalist on April 8, calling him a "bastard" and an "agent".

"It is only natural for older generations to be concerned that there is a crop of worthy leaders to hand over to," she said.

"No comment," she added after a brief pause.

Baleka told delegates that there were times that the ANC had to intervene in youth league matters - including court action and dealing with parallel league structures.

"Your conduct speaks volumes about the ANC that is your home," she said.

Mbete urged the league to continue to contribute to policy discussions and to fully participate in the ANC's 2012 elective conference.
