Title: N Balfour: Potchefstroom Correctional Centre

ADDRESS BY THE MINISTER OF CORRECTIONAL SERVICES, MR N BALFOUR, MP, DURING A VISIT TO THE POTCHEFSTROOM CORRECTIONAL CENTRE, 29 September 2004

Commissioner Linda Mti
Regional Commissioner Watson Tshivhase
Deputy Regional Commissioner Ms Kunene
Area Commissioners of North West, Mpumalanga and Limpopo
Heads of Correctional Centres of Klerksdorp, Potchefstroom, Wolmaranstad and Christiana
Senior Managers of the Region

On the previous occasion that I visited this region, it was not under the most pleasing of circumstances. It is a while back that I went to Nelspruit and Barberton when we were faced with illegal industrial action.

I was most unhappy with the circumstances around that, but more so, not too impressed with the obvious lack of discipline on the one hand, and the hesitance to act strongly in the face of illegal disruptions on the other hand. Such actions and inactions give us a tarnished name and perpetuate the myth that Correctional Services either do not care about our core business or that we run an operation where leadership cannot separate itself from our general membership when it matters most.

I have said it on other occasions
