The African Union (AU) expressed great concern Monday over escalating tension between Uganda and Rwanda.

AU Commission Chairman Amara Essy spoke in a statement of the "current situation in the northeast of Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) in general and in the towns of Bunia, Beni, Butembo, Libero and Kanyabayongo in particular.

Relations between one-time allies Uganda and Rwanda have soured considerably in recent weeks, notably over the situation in the DRC.

"Just as both Uganda and Rwanda have announced their withdrawal from the DRC, this new tension is unwelcome and very worrying," Essy said.

Troops from Uganda and Rwanda, who back separate rebel groups, clashed on several occsions in 1999 and 2000 in the DRC town of Kisangani.

Essy called on both parties to refrain from any actions that could aggravate the situation in northeast Democratic Republic of Congo and compromise the ongoing process of peace and reconciliation - Sapa-AFP
