Agriculture and Land Affairs Minister Thoko Didiza is heading a government delegation to Accra, in Ghana, to the launch of an African Union (AU) drive to develop agriculture in the continent.

The Comprehensive African Agricultural Development Programme (CAADP) forms part of Nepad's vision to attain economic development in the region by raising and sustaining higher rates of agricultural growth.

The CAADP will provide a framework for restoring agricultural growth, rural development and food security on the African continent, Didiza says in a statement.

The two-day launch, which began yesterday, is seen as an opportunity to update the heads of State and government about progress regarding implementation, and also provides a platform for all leaders to agree on actions to support CAADP at regional and country levels.

African and G8 leaders are expected to attend the event, as well as leaders of regional economic communities, heads of bilateral and multilateral development organisations, leaders of farmer organisations and African and global agribusiness leaders. - BuaNews
