The manufacturing sector's relative contribution to South Africa‟s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) has constantly been deteriorating since 1981. Manufacturing production reached a peak at 21.3% of the GDP in 1981 on the back of a closed economic system that operated in a sanction-burdened South Africa. As a result, growth of other sectors (such as Finance and Trade-related sectors) was hindered.
