The European Union's Greek presidency yesterday slammed Armenia's May parliamentary elections as being marred by vote rigging and intimidation.

"The EU regrets that the overall election process did not meet international standards in a number of key aspects," the presidency said in a statement.

"The EU is especially concerned with the reoccurrence of falsification of vote counts, the unbalanced representation in the election commissions, the intimidation of proxies and the lack of transparency in the publishing of the elections results," the text added.

The problems resurfaced despite Armenia's pledges to improve transparency after the country's February presidential elections, the EU said.

The Armenian opposition appealed to the Supreme Court early June to throw out the results of the parliamentary election.

European observers have also said that electoral fraud was widespread during the May 25 poll, which handed a majority of parliamentary seats to pro-presidential parties. - Sapa-AFP.
