Police manned barricades set up along Lafayette Square, which faces the building, to prevent demonstrators from getting too close to the president's residence.
National park police officer EJ Browsnehan told AFP that "unknown numbers have been detained".
Protest organizer, Sarah Sloan of ANSWER - Act Now to Stop War and End Racism - estimated 1,000 people were present from her organization, while another anti-war group, "Iraq Pledge of Resistance" claimed they had another 200 supporters present.
The protest came the day after tens of thousands of marchers braved bitter cold in the capital to rally against a war, carrying placards saying "No blood for oil," and calling for Bush's ouster in the next election.
Police in Washington do not release crowd estimates, but organizers claimed almost 500,000 people attended Saturday's protest - Sapa-AFP.
