Unisa spokeswoman Doreen Gough said the ceremony would take place at the ZK Matthews Great Hall, Theo van Wijk building at the University's main campus in Pretoria on Thursday.
Gough said commendation was in line with Annan's achievements. She said his report "We the people: The role of the United Nations in the 21st century" apparently led to the Millennium Declaration.
"He outlined a progressive plan which UN member states could follow to bring an end to poverty and inequality, improve education, reduce the incidence of HIV/Aids... and protect the environment and humanity from violence.
"This plan is alleged to have led to and constitutes the basis of the Millennium Declaration," she said.
Although Annan served as Secretary General for eleven years, his service to the UN "spanned a period of almost 40 years, in which he served the UN in different capacities".
She said Annan's credibility was evident in the numerous honours and awards bestowed upon him, which included the Nobel Peace Prize 2001 and over 20 honorary degrees and national awards from various countries.
