Following on debate during 2003, the board reportedly concluded in principle that its major South African operating company, Anglo Operations (AOL) could set aside R6-million, some 10% of the 2003 donations made by the Anglo American and Anglo Platinum chairperson's fund, for donations to political parties contesting the 2004 South African general election.
It further asked a sub-committee, headed by Mark Moody Stuart, to consider an appropriate allocation of funds.
The sub-committee consequently recommended that the African National Congress as the ruling party enjoying the majority electoral support in the country should receive R3 000 000 of the donation; the Democratic Alliance as the official opposition and next largest party, R1 500 000; R480 000 to the Inkatha Freedom Party; R240 000 to the New National Party, and R120 000 to the United Democratic Movement, the next three largest parties; and R60 000 each to the other smaller parties with representation in Parliament.
The Board informed the Anglo American Platinum board of its approach on party political donations and the Anglo American Platinum Board recommended that the company contribute R1-million to the total of R6-million proposed by AOL.
In conclusion, the Anglo American board has reaffirmed the policy of not making donations to, or incurring expenses for the benefit of, any UK political party or any other EU political organisation, as defined in the Political Parties, Elections and Referendums Act 2000.
