The African National Congress Youth League congratulates the people of Egypt at the conclusion of their election process. The election is a clear demonstration that, following the revolution which was led mainly by young people, indeed the people have spoken and their voice has been heard.
We congratulate the newly elected President Mohammed Morsi. It is our hope that he can follow the sterling example of President Gamal Abdel Nasser, the second President of Egypt, who led the Egyptian Revolution of 1952 to overthrow the monarchy of Egypt and Sudan. During his leadership, Cde Nasser nationalised the Suez Canal Company and played an important role in anti-imperialist efforts in Africa. President Nasser also launched the War of Attrition against Israel in 1967. We hope that this victory by Mohammed Morsi therefore, will be a defence of and a commitment to fight side by side with the people of Palestine who are murdered on a daily basis by the Zionist state of Israel.
We look forward to working with the youth of Egypt through, amongst others the Pan African Youth Union, as they consolidate their democratic and free government. Working together, ours is to continue the unrelenting struggle for economic emancipation, development and total liberation of the African continent as a whole.
