The African National Congress Youth League applauds the men and women
of Team South Africa who represented our country proudly in the London
Paralympics 2012. Theirs was a job extremely well done and will indeed
go a long way to inspire the next generation.
We acknowledge that the team in its entirety would have been
young people who all their lives who have had to swim against the tide,
fight against odds and disappoint those who said they never could, today they can proudly say
- they did and they were able. It is everyday heroes such as our team
that embody that which is the best in South African youth -
determination, courage and bravery against all odds. With a total of 8
Gold and 29 medals in total, and finishing in the top 20 of the over
70 countries that participated, our pride in the team knows no bounds
and we are confident of even greater success in Brazil.
We trust that government will continue to nurture our national talent
and support sports as a critical component of social cohesion and
building a winning nation. To this end, we would expect the urgent
implementation of resolutions particularly on the revival of school
sports and expanding access to sporting facilities. The private sector
should be justly inspired too by Team South Africa and visibly express
this by pledging tangible sponsorships across all sporting codes and
not just primarily soccer, rugby and cricket.
Salute: Gold Medallists - Natalie Du Toit, Oscar Pistorius, Charles
Bouwer, Ilise Hayes, Arnu Fourie, Samkelo Radebe, Zivan Smith, Fanie
van der Merwe, and each and every player who flew the South African
flag high and did their country proud.
