The African National Congress Youth League calls on NEDBANK to retain its sponsorship to Athletics South Africa (ASA), particularly if their withdrawal is premised on what they call negative publicity of ASA. It is our strong conviction that the democratic decisions of ASA Special General Meeting, which resolved to retain its President, should be respected by all South Africans. It is apparent that Nedbank's withdrawal of the sponsorship is aimed at undermining the structures and decisions of ASA, and rolls back the development of Athletics in South Africa.
It is the responsibility of all corporations in South Africa to invest in the development of our communities and Nedbank should appreciate that reality. The ANC YL will mobilise all patriotic South Africans, corporations, institutions and government departments that bank with NEDBANK to withdraw their accounts from the bank and switch to other Banks if the sponsorship is not retained. We place it on record that this is not a threat, but a promise with a purpose of ensuring that banks and corporations understand that they have a responsibility to invest in the development of our communities.
The ANC YL is however willing to engage with the leadership of NEDBANK to establish a common understanding on how funding of sports, particularly athletics development in South Africa should not be undermined because of slight mishaps.
