The ANCWL would like to congratulate all the women who competed in the 2012 Olympic games today, on women's day and throughout the tournament. These women have filled us with a great sense of national pride at their achievements.

We are immensly proud of all our ladies. Who have competed with dignity and good sportmanship. This includes our women's hockey and soccer teams. A big well done from the League and all the women of South Africa to Bridgette Hartley who became the first of our women to bag an Olympic medal, on Women's day no less. This achievement has been the climax to women's day celebrations around the country where we have been afforded the opportunity to celebrate the achievements of yet another hard working South African woman. We wait in anticipation of more female medal hopefuls competing later this evening.

The ANCWL would like to note with pride the exceptional performance by our golden girl, Caster Semenya, in her semi final race and congratulate her on winning her heat. The WL is so proud of the manner in which Semenya has overcome the discrimination and indignity she was forced to endure at the hands of the insensitive international athletics body. Noone should be forced to go through the humiliation and discrimination she suffered publicly. But our golden girl did not let that keep her down or stop her from achieving her dreams. Semenya is tuely an inspiration to all young women who are faced with adversity. Despite the challenges she encountered on her road to London 2012, she managed to reach for her goal and is outshining her competitors. We will be 100% behind her when she competes for gold on Saturday. We urge all women to rally behind Semenya and all our Olympic women as they compete for our nation's glory and make us proud.
