The ANC's National Working Committee initiated a major review of the country's education system at its fortnightly meeting on Monday, the organisation said.

Education was a central pillar of economic growth and in the fight against poverty, the ANC said in a statement.

This comes after a decision taken at the Polokwane conference: that education must be at the centre of the ANC's social transformation over the next five years.

Other matters tabled at the meeting included the ANC's concerns on "what happens to be concerted effort to misrepresent statements made by its President, Jacob Zuma in the last two weeks".

The issues discussed at Monday's meeting are likely to come up at the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting over the weekend.

The state of the movement in all provinces, the 90th birthday celebrations of former ANC president Nelson Mandela, ANC awards, establishment of new ANC media platforms, and preparations for the Alliance Summit scheduled for April, will also be discussed at the NEC meeting.
