The
African National Congress wishes to re-state its position with
respect to allegations of rape against its Deputy President, Jacob
Zuma:
1. These are serious allegations, that must be dealt with in terms
of the law, by the appropriate institutions of the state.
2. The ANC respects the rule of law, including the principle of
presumption of innocence.
3. The ANC recognises that the rights of both the alleged victim
and alleged perpetrator must be respected and upheld.
The ANC National Executive Committee, which met on 18-20 November,
was advised by Deputy President Zuma of the allegations that had
appeared in the media, and indicated that his lawyer had been
instructed to communicate publicly on his behalf.
The NEC noted the statement by Deputy President Zuma, communicated
through his lawyer, in which he denied the allegations in the
strongest possible terms.
The NEC also noted and supported the earlier statements by ANC
spokesperson Smuts Ngonyama which outlined the organisation's
position as above.
The NEC mandated the ANC's National Officials to closely monitor
developments on this matter.
