The African National Congress (ANC) calls upon all South African, particularly the youth, to join in the commemoration of the Youth Day that will be celebrated across South Africa, tomorrow 16th June 2012,
with the official celebration taking place in Wolfson Stadium in Nelson Mandela Bay in the Eastern Cape. As South Africa marks its 36th commemoration of the youth struggles, since the brave and patriotic youth of 1976 took to the streets of South Africa in search for a better education, we call upon the all youth, regardless of their race to defend the revolutionary gains as attained by the 1976 youth, who fought tirelessly to ensure that a better education
and life for all South Africans is guaranteed. The sacrifices and achievements attained by the 1976 youth should be
defended by all South Africans at all times. Our freedom did not come painless, some of our leaders were killed, detained, maimed and other had to be flee the country for safety. Some of them even today are still not found. As future leaders, today’s youth must always celebrate this day in honours of their fore-bearers who sacrificed their everything including their lives in defence of their right to education, particularly the right to be taught in the language of their preference. We also urge all South African youth to come together to fight the scourge of poverty, unemployment and inequality. These are terrible triple scourge that affect the South African youth of today. The youth must commit their energy in ensuring that these current challenges are overcome. Happy Youth Day commemoration to all the South African youth.
