The African National Congress (ANC) has noted the granting of parole to former apartheid era hit squad member Butana Nofemele.
We think this parole marks the closure of a sad chapter in the history of the anti-apartheid struggle in South Africa, especially when considering the role Nofemele confessed to have played in the murder of activist and human rights lawyer Griffiths Mxenge in 1981 and Zwelibanzi Nyanda, brother of Communications Minister Siphiwe Nyanda.
For his confession, which exposed the notorious apartheid-killing machine - Vlaakplaas police hit squad - Nofemele was granted amnesty by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. This confession also saved him from going to the gallows for the murder in 1986 of Brits farmer Johannes Lourens.
The ANC is satisfied with all the steps and consultative process undertaken by Correctional Services Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula before arriving at the decision.
