The African National Congress (ANC) welcomes the endorsement by Parliament of the five-member South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) interim board, which will serve a three-month term before the permanent one is appointed. A sizable majority in the National Assembly has recommended the interim board for appointment.
With legal, business, media and political background, the interim board, which comprises known and respected individuals in their respective fields, bring to the SABC the necessary skills to ensure adherence to fiscal discipline and accountability. The interim board's mandate includes the urgent filling of key posts of group Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Chief Financial Officer (CFO) and Head of News.
The ANC firmly believes that this will go a long way in creating stability and restoring morale at the Public Broadcaster. We are satisfied that the interim board has been legitimately appointed to pave way for the permanent board. We have full confidence in the interim SABC board and extend well wishes to chairperson Irene Charnley, deputy chairperson Phil Mtimkulu, board members Libby Lloyd, Susan Vos, and Lesley Sedibe.
The ANC urges the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Communication to ensure that the appointment of the permanent 12-member board adheres to processes, which include hearings to fulfil the expectations of all South Africans.
