The African National Congress (ANC) welcomes the appointment of Absa Group Chairperson Gill Marcus as Governor of the Reserve Bank, officially taking over the reigns from Tito Mboweni on 9 November 2009.
We would also like to express much appreciation for the work done by Governor Mboweni since being appointed to the Reserve Bank.
Marcus, who is not knew to the Reserve Bank - having served as deputy governor - is highly regarded in financial circles in South Africa and abroad. A progressive thinker, she will be bringing to the bank financial systems towards ensuring the achievement of economic growth.
The appointment of Marcus as the first woman Governor of the Reserve Bank also demonstrates the ANC-led Government's commitment to gender equality.
