The African National Congress (ANC) National Working Committee (NWC) yesterday (3 August 2009) held its regular meeting at Chief Albert Luthuli House. Regeneration of ANC structures was among key issues under discussion.
The NWC - following the dissolution of the Provincial Executive Committees (PECs) in the North West and Western Cape by the National Executive Committee (NEC) - appointed Provincial Task Teams (PTTs) in both provinces as directed by the NEC decision taken on 17 and 18 July 2009.
The primary objective of the PTTs will be to build ANC structures, strengthen relations with Alliance partners and work towards the convening of provincial conferences within nine months. This is in line with Rule 12 (d) of the ANC Constitution as amended and adopted at the 52nd National Conference in Polokwane in 2007.
According to Rule 12 (d) of the ANC Constitution, the National Executive Committee (NEC) shall:
1. Ensure that the provincial, regional and branch structures of the ANC function democratically and effectively.
2. The ANC may suspend or dissolve a PEC where necessary.
3. A suspension of a PEC shall not exceed a period of three months.
4. Elections for a PEC, which has been dissolved, shall be called within nine months from dissolution.
5. The NEC may appoint an interim structure during the period of suspension or the dissolution of the PEC to fulfil the functions of the PEC.
The NWC has appointed Comrade Martin Sebakwane as convenor of the North West PTT. Members of the PTT are comrades Martin Sebakwane, Louisa Mabe, Wendy Magake, Paul Sebego, Morwesi Segale-Diswai, Mojalefa Nale, Bushy Maape, Violet Molotsi, Magome Masike, Zacharia Molotsi, Israel "Phefo" Mabotsa, Sam Louw, Jane Matsumela, Godfrey Olifant, Robert Malavi, Doctor Sibi, Alec Nchabeleng, Jacob Nkoditse and Garnet Kaaf. The NWC has appointed comrade Saki Mofokeng, on a full-time basis to co-ordinate functions of the PTT.
