The African National Congress (ANC) in KwaZulu-Natal joins the people of the
Province of KwaZulu-Natal in expressing our pride today (Sunday 29 November
2009) with regards to the opening of the world class Moses Mabhida Stadium.
The marvelous stadium with the 350 meter high arch will officially be opened
today (Sunday 28 November 2009) with a football match between two top
KwaZulu-Natal soccer teams Amazulu and Maritzburg United.
The stadium is indeed a beauty and will become the pride not only of Durban
but KwaZulu-Natal as a whole.
Even the skeptics who poured scorn with regards to the costs and resources
being put into this infrastructure are today marveling alongside us at the
beauty of this landmark. Indeed the prophecies of doom now see the light and
are convinced of the necessity of building this wonderful facility which
will attract thousands of tourists from around the country.
The Moses Mabhida stadium was designed as a tourist attraction. Post 2010
the eThekwini Municipality will position the stadium as a tourist attraction
which will also form part of the 2010 legacy. With the stadiums
international standards and remarkable facilities we are hoping to bring
many international sporting games to this province and indeed the country.
As the ANC we believe that the stadium will continue ensuring that the
legacy of Moses Mabhida is flown high. We also call on the eThekwini
Municipality to ensure that visitors and tourists visiting the stadium are
tutored on the remarkable life of this veteran of the struggle.
As the ANC we have called on all our structures to go out in their numbers
to be part of history in the opening of this remarkable facility. The
opening of this stadium shows that the province of KwaZulu-Natal and South
Africa as a whole are ready for the World Cup in 2010. Our effort now
through our provincial government is to woo top countries to base in this
province and to ensure that tourists coming in choose the province of
KwaZulu-Natal as their preferred destination.
