The Office of the ANC Chief Whip welcomes the finalisation of the list of
candidates for the SABC's new Board of Directors by Parliament's Portfolio
Committee on Communications.
The finalisation of the list is a culmination of a transparent, open and
inclusive selection process with a view to find suitably qualified and
capable individuals to provide the much needed leadership to the public
broadcaster.
It is also serves as a culmination of a swift process of returning the SABC
back to its normal and efficient operational state, following a catalogue of
financial and leadership challenges at the institution. We are satisfied
that the selected team is representative of the broader South African
demography and posses a wide array of skills necessary to transform the
institution.
The Office of the Chief Whip notes and respects the views of some opposition
parties with regard to some candidates in the list. We accept that it is
impossible that the composition in its entirety will enjoy the acceptance of
all political parties. We wish to urge all parties to rise above petty
politicking and unite behind the new board in the interest of the SABC and
the nation.
The Portfolio Committee must be commended for demonstrating the necessary
seriousness in dealing with the grave challenges facing the SABC.
The list of candidates for the new Board will be tabled formally before the
sitting of the National Assembly in October. Should the House endorse the
candidates, Parliament will then recommend the new Board to President Jacob
Zuma for consideration and appointment.
