The Office of the ANC Chief Whip is pleased that there are several
parties in Parliament that are distancing themselves from yet another
frivolous motion by Cope and its leader Mosioua Lekota. Lekota’s series
of motions and tirades against President Jacob Zuma in parliament have
become too tired and predictable to take seriously.
Since coming to Parliament in 2009, Cope has attempted several political
stunts that clearly exhibit an obsession with President Zuma. They have
tried muddying the parliamentary process of electing a President when
they fielded Rev. Mvume Dandala to oppose President Zuma’s election;
attempted a futile motion of no confidence against the President; spewed
spurious allegations in the House that the President has violated his
oath of office without providing any evidence; and now there is an
attempt at the so-called “impeachment” motion.
These compulsive anti-Zuma motions are not only laughable and weak, but
are also indicative of a party out of its depth.
Like a dare-devil stunt man character in a fictional film, Lekota and
his party’s political relevance thrives only through shock and
disbelief. This is what sustains him and his dwindling party in the
public platform, rather than good political objectives and programmes.
The more outrageous and absurd his public statements are the chances are
he will score few media mentions.
There is no shred of evidence to support Lekota’s spurious claims to
stand as a proper motion in Parliament. We condemn with the deserved
contempt his reckless politicking and defamatory statements against the
President.
