The debate on racism in Cape Town, which was sparked by a report by Professor Martin Hall and Dr Sabie Surtee of UCT is welcomed. We should welcome the fact and should be magnanimous enough to ensure a debate takes place so that we are able to build bridges between our people and together improve the quality of all the peoples' lives in the Western Cape.

Shockingly, the Premier blames the ANC for creating the "myth" that the City of Cape Town is "hostile to black people". The truth is that the report was not sponsored by the ANC, nor does it even blame the DA. Surely, instead of her vitriolic attack, she should have considered the report and expressed, in the least, a measure of concern.

What does one expect when she chooses an all-male, mostly pale cabinet? What does one expect when Frank Martin, a DA councillor in the City, calls for "not feeding the mouths" of those children who emigrate with their parents from the Eastern Cape, with no censure from the DA? This Frank Martin, of course, is the same councillor who got a slap on the wrist for mobilising racially explosive housing allocations in Delft.

The Western Cape has a fragile social cohesion that has polarised our communities over the many decades.

What will it take for the Premier to just be the Premier of all the people in the Western Cape?

Surely your dislike of the ANC can't be bigger than your desire to be concerned and change the quality of all the peoples' lives in the Western Cape?
