The ANC is concerned by the situation that is developing in the provincial legislature
Whilst we support the withdrawal by our Chief Whip of the statement that the Premier is turning the House into a Bantustan, we remain concerned about the attempts of the DA, led by Premier Zille, to change the strong tradition of robust oversight brought by the ANC to the Legislature.
The follow remain issues of grave concern; it increasingly seems that the separation of powers between legislature and the government is being blurred. Programs of the legislature and key decisions in the legislature are being taken in the office of the Premier; we remain deeply concerned about the proceedings in the House on the 18th August and the role played by the Deputy Speaker on that day. We will introduce a motion in the House today on this matter. Some rulings in the House are inconsistent and do not accord with the traditions of the House. In particular the door has been opened to for members to question the integrity of other members of the House. Key programs of the House and its committees, including the programs of are decided only by members of the DA and without the participation of other parties and by chairpersons of committees without the participation of committee members.
