The African National Congress (ANC) is pleased with its overall performance
in the municipal by-elections that were held yesterday around the country.
It retained all the wards it previously occupied and further won two new
wards.

In KwaZulu-Natal six municipal wards were contested. The ANC retained its
ward and further won two wards that were previously held by the IFP. In
Eastern Cape the ANC won all four by-elections.

In the Northern and Western Cape, though the ANC did not wrestle the
contested wards from the hands of the opposition parties, we are nonetheless
pleased with our improved showing. Though we lots a ward in the Western
Cape, Breede Valley (Worcester) to the DA, the ANC hegemony in the ward has
improved. This is because the percentage votes the ANC got is more votes
than in April 2009. This is a confirmation that people appreciate the work
the ANC government is doing to improve the lives of the people and that
working together we can do more.

The next round of municipal by-elections would be held on 18 November 2009.
The ANC calls upon communities in the contested wards to participate in
their numbers and ensure continued victory for the ANC and improved service
delivery.
