The African National Congress is shocked and perturbed to learn of the sms circulating which promises a reward of 2 million to any person who might kill the ANC Youth League President, Cde Julius Malema.
As we have said before, these personal threats on Cde Malema reminds us of that part of our ugly history when the rightwing groups started an aggressive propaganda campaign about the individual members of our movement in the past and such members eventually were assassinated. We are hoping that there is no attempt to create such an environment around Cde Malema, irrespective of the irritation some people might be having with him.
The ANC has repeatedly warned the Freedom Front font that their anti Malema campaign can be used by some righwing fringe to advance an agenda that even the Freedom Front will cringe about. It is our view that the campaign by the Freedom Front creates an environment conducive for anybody or grouping to take action meant to harm and even assassinate Malema.
The ANC takes the threat very seriously and have reported this to the Minister for Police, the honourable Nathi Mthethwa, to follow this up with an investigation, as this sms is a clearly a public declaration to kill.
