The African National Congress (ANC) welcomes the announcement by the
Minister of Sports and Recreation, Makhenkesi Stofile that government will
seek legal advice on the Mokgadi Caster Semenya gender-testing saga.
The ANC finds the reports in Australia's Daily Telegraph which has migrated
to our media as vexatious and mischievous. The media is allowing itself to
be used by people who are refusing to accept Caster's victory in the 800m
IAAF World Athletics Championships. Allegations that are offensive and
demeaning, not only to Caster and her family but also to our nation, are
being peddled about to undermine her victory and person.
The South African government is right to explore all legal ways to protect
Caster against violation of her rights. She is not a criminal but a
dedicated athlete that made all of us proud. We urge the South African
government and Athletics South Africa to stop at nothing to halt this
senseless abuse and violation of Caster's human rights.
We are looking forward to a meeting between the South African government and
the International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF), in order to
put this matter to rest. This will allow Caster to enjoy her success and
also to focus and prepare for her year-end examinations.
