The African National Congress (ANC) is happy at the successful conclusion
over the weekend of the organisation's Eastern Cape provincial conference in
East London.
We also welcome the incident-free and democratic election of the new
Provincial Executive Committee (PEC) led by Comrade Phumulo Masualle who has
assumed the position of Chairperson. The ANC congratulates Comrade Masualle,
his deputy Gugile Nkwinti, Secretary Oscar Mabuyane, Deputy Secretary Helen
August, Treasurer Thandiswa Marawu and other additional PEC members. The ANC
is confident that the new leadership mandated by the people to steer the ANC
programme of action in the province, will deliver on the promise we made to
voters in the 2009 elections.
The conference went through a comprehensive introspection in reporting to
delegates and debated with vigour challenges facing the organisation. We are
aware that - due to time constraints - conference could not discuss
organisational renewal. Organisational renewal is of particular significance
to ANC branches - the primary vehicle through which the organisation
enhances its mass character to keep in touch with broader society.
We therefore, welcome a resolution to convene a Provincial General Council
(PGC) that will - within three months - engage in detail on the concrete
steps to build and strengthen the organisation. At the core of
organisational renewal is the rollout of the political education programme
to target all branches and regions.
