The Ad Hoc Committee on the
Appointment of the Public Protector reached its decision yesterday to
recommend the name of Ms Thulisile Madonsela for appointment as the new
Public Protector of the Republic of South Africa
The selection of Ms
Madonsela, who one of the eight shotlisted candidates interviewed on 14-15
September, was unanimously supported by all political parties represented in
the multiparty Ad Hoc Committee.
The National Assembly will consider the
recommendation of the Ad Hoc Committee during its sitting on 22 September
2009. The decision of the National Assembly will then be forwarded to
President Jacob Zuma for consideration and appointment in terms of the
Constitution and the Public Protector Act of 1994.
The new Public
Protector, who is expected to serve for a non-renewable term of seven years,
will take office before 15 October 2009, the date on which the term of
office for the current incumbent expires.
The Office of the Chief Whip is
confident that Ms Madonsela will equal the challenge of ensuring that the
institution continue to contribute meaningfully to the advancement and
consolidation of our country's constitutional democracy.
We once again
wish to thank the outgoing Public Protector, Advocate Lawrence Mushwana, for
the sterling service rendered and wish him well with his future
endeavours.
