The African National Congress in Parliament on Thursday pledged to continue working with all South Africans to build a better future for all, despite its overwhelming majority in the National Assembly.

ANC Chief Whip Nathi Nhleko said in a statement the floor-crossing process signified "the maturity of our democracy".

"Our society is not static, but dynamic, and within the period of five years changes in political views must be accommodated. This is an internationally-recognised norm."

The ANC's NA caucus increased from 266 to 275 members during the 15-day window period for MPs and MPLs to cross the floor to the party of their choice without losing their seats, which ends on Friday.

"As has already been reported, this effectively gives the ANC more than two-thirds majority of seats in Parliament," he said.

"The ANC will continue to work together with all South Africans to reconstruct and develop South Africa.

"We continue to be informed by our belief in the correctness of participatory democracy and co-operative governance.

"We shall always strive to achieve consensus. We believe that it is the duty of all South Africans to join hands with the ANC government as we work to create a better South Africa."

The ANC remained a home for all South Africans who were committed to the country's reconstruction and development.

The recent realignments signified that South African society was reaching consensus about "the correctness of ANC policies", Nhleko said - Sapa
