As results continue to come in a day after election day, results in Port Elizabeth, which includes the Nelson Mandela Metro, have revealed that the African National Congress (ANC) is in the lead.

Shortly after 1 pm, the ANC held a total of 51.25% of votes in Port Elizabeth followed by the Democratic Alliance (DA) with 40.90%. The Nelson Mandela Bay Metro which has been under the control of the ANC has been hotly contested.

The Tshwane Metro which has traditionally been an ANC stronghold, continued to reflect this trend shortly after midday. The Metro has recently been incorporated with the Metsweding municipality which was made up of the Kungwini and Nokeng tsa Taemane municipalities.

The Tshwane Metro now boasts seven regions and 105 wards from the original 76 wards. The ANC holds 61.13% followed by the DA at 32.9% of the votes.

In the heart of the country’s economic centre, Gauteng, which includes the City of Johannesburg and the Ekurhuleni Metro, the ruling ANC party has a total of 43.93% and 61.20% respectively.

The DA was just ahead of the ANC in the City of Johannesburg with 49.96% of the votes while trailing behind in the Ekurhuleni metro at 30.98% of the votes.

In Mpumalanga, which has become notorious with protests over service delivery in areas such as Balfour, the ANC continued to wield power in the mainly rural province. Of all municipalities in the province, the ANC held 78.24% of votes while the DA trailed behind with 16.28% of votes.

The IEC is expected to brief media on the update of the counting of ballot papers later today.
