The young man who allegedly attempted to hijack an aeroplane in Cape Town is in the country legally, Home Affairs Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqcakula said on Tuesday.

The Minister was speaking during World Refugee Day celebrations attended by many refugees and asylum seekers at Constitutional Hill.

The Minister explained that the 21-year-old was a student at the University of Cape Town (UCT) with a three-year study permit.

“The information we have is that he is a well disciplined person with no problem what so ever,” said the minister.

Tinashe Rioga appeared in the Bellville Magistrate Court yesterday, after he was overpowered an arrested in the attempt to hijack a South African Airways plane over the weekend.

He faces two provisional charges, one of contravening aviation regulations by trying to seize an aircraft in flight and another of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm.

He remains in custody and will appear in court again on 26 June. – BuaNews
