AfriForum Youth Tuks will over the next couple of days present self-defence training and information sessions to students of the University of Pretoria (UP). During these sessions, students will be informed about their rights when demonstrations take place on campus, while they will also learn how to protect themselves in danger situations.

According to Jaco Grobbelaar, AfriForum Youth’s Coordinator for the Tuks campus, students interested in attending these sessions or requiring more information about it, can send their name and surname to 072 142 8668 via WhatsApp, after which additional information will be made available on WhatsApp groups.

Morné Mostert, AfriForum Youth’s National Project Coordinator, says that the initiative was launched by the youth organisation because the safety of students on this campus and also on other campuses is being threatened, notwithstanding the assurance given to AfriForum Youth by Prof Cheryl de la Rey, Rector of the UP, that the rights of students will be protected.

“It is clear that the UP management is failing in its duty to ensure that paying students can continue uninterrupted with academic activities. Management is allowing a group of approximately 30 rebellious students to dictate them in such a manner that the campus is currently closed down until 10 October,” concludes Mostert.
