The civil rights initiative, AfriForum will follow the announcement of the Judicial Services Commission's (JSC) preliminary findings on its investigation of Judge President closely. According to media reports the JSC is expected to release it preliminary findings by means of a media release.
AfriForum regards the JSC's handling of its latest investigation as a serious test for the independence and credibility of the judiciary. The investigation followed after it became known that Hlophe allegedly tried to influence judges of the Constitutional court to rule in favour of President Zuma during his corruption trial.
AfriForum's legal spokesperson Willie Spies said in a statement Friday is D-day for the credibility of the judiciary. Hlophe has already managed to escape liability on three occasions in the past after controversial dealings and racist remarks. Should the JSC fail to embark upon a fully fledged disciplinary hearing this time, it could leave serious question marks about the credibility of the South African judiciary.
In the mean time, the JSC and AfriForum still await responses from Judge Hlope after Mail & Guardian reported that Hlophe launched an attack on the constitutional court in an interview with a journalist. In the interview, Hlophe allegedly stated that he won't greet Chief Justice Pius Langa since he "doesn't shake a white man's hand". The reports featured in the week while the JSC was finalizing its preliminary investigation.
