During the weekend of 18 and 19 August, Southern African Development Community (SADC) leaders took a shocking resolution in Maputo, Mozambique, to deprive SADC citizens of their right to have human rights violations tried before the SADC Tribunal.
The message SADC leaders sent to the world was that SADC countries want to turn the human rights clock in Southern Africa back to three decades ago, and to undo freedoms achieved with difficulty and through toil and even blood with one political decision.
AfriForum launched an action plan as part of its programme to protect civil rights and the rule of law to counter this perturbing development.
The five point action plan encompasses a campaign, which will be waged in multiple areas, and which comprises –
1. Implementation of SADC resolutions in South Africa;
2. An appeal to the African Commission and the African Court to act against SADC leaders;
3. Sustained pressure on the South African government to protect its citizens in neighbouring countries, such as Zimbabwe;
4. Lodging complaints with regulating authorities against companies that finance human rights violations; and
5. Bringing a suit before the International Criminal Court.
The struggle for human dignity and justice is a long, drawn-out one. AfriForum will continue the struggle until it succeeds.

A luta continua!
