AfriForum has called for a meeting with the Provincial Commissioner of Mpumalanga, Lieutenant General Thulani Ntobela. According to Nantes Kelder, the head of AfriForum’s investigation unit, the meeting was called for following a request by AfriForum for an investigation into the existence of a syndicate allegedly involved in stock theft and farm attacks in the Belfast area.
“The feedback given to us by the police does not agree with our own information at all. At this stage it is evident that the person who was supposed to investigate the matter, had not even gone to the trouble to peruse the dockets, and may have been misled by the investigating officer,” says Kelder.
AfriForum is also alarmed at the fact that the suspects were arrested on various occasions but then inexplicably released on other cases. According to information received there was a definite decrease in stock theft when the suspects concerned were being detained.
“We would like to give the Provincial Commissioner the facts in person and ask that the cases be investigated by the Organised Crime Unit. We are not going to sit back and wait for more farm attacks to happen,” Kelder concluded.
