Top Afrikaans singers like Steve Hofmeyr, Jay, Sorina (Flooze in 7de Laan), Jakkie Louw, Adam Tas and 12 other well-known artists will show their support for the retention of Pretoria’s name at the Voortrekker Monument in Pretoria on Saturday, 17 November from 07:00 to 13:00. The festival is taking place at a time during which the Tshwane Metro Council is coming with renewed attempts to change Pretoria’s name. AfriForum is presenting this Afrikaans music festival to celebrate Pretoria’s 157th anniversary, and the Solidarity Movement’s 110th anniversary. Pieter Koen will be the master of ceremonies. Record is the media partner.

Admission is free and no bookings are needed. Last year’s festival, held in celebration of Pretoria’s 156th anniversary, was attended by approximately 30 000 people.

According to AfriForum’s CEO, Kallie Kriel, it is important that as many people as possible attend the festival to show their support for Pretoria’s name. ‘Thousands coming to show support for the retention of Pretoria’s name will send a clear message to the Minister of Arts and Culture that Pretoria’s residents are not in support of the latest attempts to change the name,’ Kriel said.

Kriel pointed out that admission is free to enable as many persons as possible, families in particular, to come and show support for Pretoria’s name. ‘This year, some of the most famous artists will perform early to ensure constant family entertainment throughout the day,’ Kriel said. Kriel invited the public to bring fold-up chairs and family and friends along to come and enjoy the day.

Both gates to the Voortrekker Monument (off Eeufees Road and Smuts Avenue) will be open to avoid traffic congestion. Food and drinks will be sold on the grounds. Own alcohol will, however, not be allowed. For any enquiries, please phone AfriForum on 086 10 200 30. Information on the music festival is available on the website at www.afriforum.co.za <http://www.afriforum.co.za> .
