AfriForum launched an online petition to stop mining developments on the border of the Pilanesberg National Park in the North West Province.

According to Julius Kleynhans, AfriForum’s Head of Environmental Affairs, mining in the area poses many threats. ‘These activities will damage the natural environment and will disturb a very sensitive area which includes wetlands and springs. These wetlands serve as a haven for many threatened species such as the black rhino, cheetah, wild dog, brown hyena, African rock python, bullfrogs and other invertebrates,’ Kleynhans said.

‘The petition should be signed by all those interested in the conservation of our National Parks and can be signed by following the link, www.groenforum.co.za <http://www.groenforum.co.za> ,’ Kleynhans said.

The proposed mining site will be on the north-western border of the park on the boundary of the Pilanesberg National Park and the Black Rhino Game Reserve. ‘It poses various threats to the area, including acid mine drainage in an area that is already water scarce, the impact on animals, ecological degradation, habitat destruction and many more,’ Kleynhans said.

According to Kleynhans, the development of mines contributes to short-term economic growth, while ecotourism developments will result in long-term economic growth, education and conservation. ‘We therefore need to conserve our heritage and natural resources,’ he concluded.

The petition will be addressed to the Minister of Environmental and Water Affairs, Ms Edna Molewa, and will support the no-go alternative in terms of mining developments not being allowed. At the same time, the petition demonstrates support for the Heritage Development Project to join the Pilanesberg National Park with the Madikwe Game Reserve.
