AfriForum today addressed a letter to the more than 1 500 South Africans who have signed up to become involved in the campaign against farm murders, encouraging them to write letters to the Minister of Police, Nathi Mthethwa, in which he is requested to have farm murders declared a priority crime.
In AfriForum’s letter Ernst Roets, AfriForum’s Deputy CEO, explains that this organisation plans, among other things, to host a national day of protest against farm murders as well as a national safety summit, but that energy must first be released among the public before these national projects can be tackled.
The public is encouraged to address letters to the Minister of Police for his personal attention, in which they motivate why, in their view, farm murders must be prioritised. The letters should be sent to AfriForum’s office where they will be collated into one stack, which will be delivered to the minister’s office when AfriForum meets with him later this year. People are also encouraged to relate their own stories, especially if they have in one way or the other been affected by a farm attack.
The letters should be addressed to the Minister of Police, Nathi Mthethwa, but should be sent to AfriForum for delivery to the minister’s office. Letters can be sent to AfriForum in one of the following ways:
· Letters can be e-mailed to stopdiemoorde@afriforum.co.za <mailto:stopdiemoorde@afriforum.co.za> ;
· letters can be faxed to 012 664 1281; or
· letters can be mailed to PO Box 17216, Lyttelton, 0140.
‘We hope to hand more than a hundred letters from members of the public to the minister,’ Roets said.
