The civil rights organisation AfriForum today expressed its sympathy at the passing of Prof Jakes Gerwell.
'Prof Gerwell's enormous contribution to the promotion of Afrikaans and mother tongue education in South Africa was and remains an inspiration,' Ernst Roets, Deputy CEO of AfriForum, said.
Roets added that it is tragic that the suggestions about the advancement of mother tongue education in South Africa, which were drafted under the leadership of Prof Gerwell in the Gerwell report, have not yet been realised. Among other things, Gerwell requested that two universities be identified and funded for the promotion of Afrikaans, one in the north of South Africa and one in the south.
“Our sincere condolences go out to Mr Gerwell’s loved-ones in this difficult time. He will surely leave a void in the South African community”, Roets said.
